Mauricio Suárez González is a drummer, composer, and producer originally from Montevideo, Uruguay, now based in New York City. With a passion for cultural exchange, his journey has taken him through Mexico City, São Paulo, and beyond, blending the rhythms of Latin American folk, the spontaneity and improvisation of jazz, and cinematic soundscapes to create his own voice.
Mauricio's musical journey began with guitar and harmony studies under Pablo Traverzo in Uruguay, but it was the call of rhythm that led him to the drums. He honed his drumming skills under Marcio Rocha in Brazil and further refined his jazz drumming with Gabriel Puentes in Mexico City and later with Peter Retzlaff in New York City. As a drummer, he draws deeply from Afro-Latin American rhythms such us Candombe from Uruguay to Black-American music improvisation crafting a distinctive sound.
With a degree in Composition and Music Production, Mauricio also studied with renowned mentors such as Mario Santos, Federico Sánchez, José Luis Esquivel, and Latin Grammy-nominated Rosino Serrano. He has composed for films, including Disney's streaming platform, theater productions, and contemporary dance, while arranging for orchestral musical theater works.
What makes Mauricio stand out is how easily he switches between different worlds—whether he's performing or composing, working with traditional or modern styles, or jumping from the stage to the screen.
Based in New York, Mauricio continues to perform as a drummer, composer, producer, and music teacher.
